I just happened to read this essay about a search for a discontinued cologne in the Wall Street Journal. I didn’t notice the name of the writer and just dug in.
I liked the second half of this essay much better than the first. The essay started to feel oddly familiar. I was thrilled to realize I discovered an essay by Andre Aciman. Aciman also wrote Call Me Your Name — the best “gay novel” I read in 2008
Both the essay and the novel have this fresh tormented sense of longing delivered with few words. Both also point to a unique father/son relationship. The novel and the book work hard to evoke Italy.
Call Me Your Name won a Lambda Literary award and received a lot of NYTimes love
The Gay Recluse says the book is “homophobic” but I didn’t read it that way.
